what's in the file
What is a GeoJSON file?
GeoJSON is JSON with a fixed shape: a FeatureCollection of Features, each with a geometry and a bag of properties. It is the format web maps speak. Leaflet, Mapbox and Google Maps read it directly, QGIS exports it, and most APIs that return locations return it. Because it's plain text you can open one in a text editor and read the coordinates.
Coordinates are longitude first, then latitude. That order trips up almost everyone once. If a file shows up off the coast of Somalia instead of in the Alps, someone wrote the pairs the other way round.
What the viewer shows
Every feature is read: Points, LineStrings, Polygons and their Multi variants. A bare geometry or a single Feature without a collection around it works too. The outline is drawn from all of them. The length is the sum of every line, plus the perimeter of every polygon. Start and end come from the first and last coordinate in file order.
Properties aren't displayed. A file that declares an older crs member in another projection is reprojected to lat/lon on the way in. Everything else is assumed to be WGS84 already, as the GeoJSON spec requires.

Frequently asked questions
Is the GeoJSON viewer free?
Yes. Viewing a file, the stats and the 3D preview cost nothing. AvoMap charges for exported videos, and that pays for the free tools.
Does my file get uploaded?
The file is read in your browser. When you open the 3D preview, the geometry extracted from it is sent to AvoMap to build that preview. The original file stays on your computer.
Is this a GeoJSON validator?
A rough one. If the file parses and draws where you expect, it is valid enough for Leaflet, Mapbox or QGIS. It does not tell you which line of a broken file is wrong; a JSON linter is the better tool for that.
Does it need a FeatureCollection?
No. A single Feature or a bare geometry such as a LineString is wrapped in one on the way in. The file does need to be valid JSON, so a trailing comma will stop it.
Why does my data show up in the ocean?
The coordinates are probably latitude first. GeoJSON wants longitude, latitude. Swap the pairs and the outline will land where it should.
Can I see the route on a real map?
Yes. Once the file has loaded, Open 3D Preview shows the track over satellite terrain in the AvoMap editor. From there you can render it as a video.
Does it work on a phone?
It does. Any current mobile browser can open this page and pick a file from your phone's storage.
Can I convert GeoJSON to KML or GPX here?
No, this page only reads. The converters in the footer take KML, KMZ, GPX and shapefiles.
