KML and KMZ:
What's in the File

What is a KML file?

KML stands for Keyhole Markup Language. Keyhole was the company Google bought in 2004 to build Google Earth, and the name stuck. A KML file is XML that describes places, lines and shapes on a map, plus how they should look: icons, line colours, camera positions for a fly-through. Google Earth reads and writes it. So do Google My Maps, QGIS, ArcGIS and most route planners.

For a route, the part that matters is the LineString: a list of longitude, latitude and sometimes altitude for every point. That's what this viewer pulls out, measures and draws. Pins and polygons in the same file are ignored.

What is a KMZ file?

A KMZ is a KML file zipped up, usually together with the icons and images it refers to. Google Earth saves as KMZ by default because the result is smaller and travels as one file. Rename a .kmz to .zip and open it and you'll find a doc.kml inside. The viewer does that unpacking for you.

One thing to know: a KMZ can hold several paths. The viewer reads all the lines it finds and adds up their length. If your file has a dozen separate paths, the distance shown is the total, and start and end are taken from the first and the last one.

Turn the KML file into a 3D map video in the AvoMap editor

The viewer shows you the outline. The AvoMap editor puts the same track on satellite terrain, flies a camera along it and exports an MP4 in up to 4K.

The editor is free to use. You pay per exported video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KML viewer free?

Yes. Viewing a file, the stats and the 3D preview cost nothing. AvoMap charges for exported videos, and that pays for the free tools.

Does my file get uploaded?

The file is read in your browser. When you open the 3D preview, the route extracted from it is sent to AvoMap to build that preview. The original file stays on your computer.

Can I open a KML file without Google Earth?

Yes, that is what this page is for. Drop the file in and you see the track and its length without installing anything. Google Earth on the web opens KML too, but it wants the file imported into a project first.

How do I open a KMZ file in Google Maps?

Google Maps itself does not open KMZ. Google My Maps does: create a map, click Import and pick the KMZ, and the layer then shows in the Google Maps app under Your places. To check what is in the file first, drop it here.

Can it open KMZ files?

Yes. A KMZ is a zipped KML. Drop it in and the viewer unpacks it.

Can I see the route on a real map?

Yes. Once the file has loaded, Open 3D Preview shows the track over satellite terrain in the AvoMap editor. From there you can render it as a video.

Does it work on a phone?

It does. Any current mobile browser can open this page and pick a file from your phone's storage.

Can I convert the file to GPX here?

Not on this page. The KML to GPX converter in the footer does that, also for free and also in the browser.
